How Samyang Foods turned a fan-made YouTube dare into a multi-billion-dollar brand — a structured analysis of Buldak's influencer marketing: the model, the case studies (good and bad), the numbers, and what's transferable.

Buldak is the most instructive influencer-marketing case in food CPG of the last decade — and the core lesson is counterintuitive: the brand's biggest wins were not campaigns Samyang created, but organic creator moments Samyang was fast and generous enough to amplify.
Five findings a marketer should take away:
A widely repeated claim — that Samyang signed an official Cardi B partnership in late 2024 — could not be verified anywhere in the public record through Aug 2026. Her impact was entirely organic and unpaid ("wow… I need to stop trying stuff for free" — HipHopDX). The famous "truckload of noodles" went to Adalynn Sofia, a young Texas fan — not to Cardi B.
Buldak Bokkeum Myun ("Hot Chicken Flavor Ramen") launched in April 2012 after Samyang's now-Vice-Chair Kim Jung-soo saw queues at a spicy-chicken restaurant in Seoul; development reportedly consumed ~1,200 chickens and two tons of sauce (Wikipedia, JoongAng Daily). Korea initially judged it too spicy to be mainstream. Social media decided otherwise.
Buldak's "influencer program" is not a roster of paid ambassadors. It is a four-layer system in which paid activity sits on top of proven organic demand — never the other way around.
The base layer is fan content at staggering scale: 1.5M+ Fire Noodle Challenge TikToks by 2024, ~360–405M Buldak-tagged TikTok posts, 20B+ total views of Buldak-keyword content (Korea Product Post, JvM case, Korea Herald). Mukbang giants — Yuka Kinoshita, Zach Choi, Stephanie Soo — made Buldak a recurring format years before it reached Western shelves. Fan recipe remixes (carbonara + milk, cheese pulls, "bulguri") became free R&D that Samyang converted into SKUs.
Samyang's signature move: monitor for organic spikes, then respond fast with generosity and theater. The Adalynn truck (§4.3) and the Copenhagen Spicy Ferry (§4.4) are the canonical examples. The company's stated philosophy: "We prioritize showing consumers having a good time with our products, rather than simply highlighting their excellent taste" (Korea Herald).
Since Samyang America's founding (2021) and staffing up (~18 → ~100 people), the brand has layered on owned programs: the PLAY BULDAK TikTok branded mission with (G)I-DLE (§4.5), Splash Buldak pop-ups in NYC/LA, Coachella partnerships 2025–26, the BOYNEXTDOOR "Hotter Than My EX" Valentine's campaign with new mascot Peppo, and retail-media/CTV spend at Walmart, Target and Kroger (Marketing Dive, PR Newswire).
BTS's Jimin and Jungkook, Cardi B and Keith Lee all moved sales without contracts. Where Samyang does pay, it buys context, not endorsements: main sponsor of BTS's 2022 Las Vegas concerts (40,000 booth visitors in 4 days — Korea Herald), 2022 MAMA Awards, Coachella category partner with a GloRilla fan-content station (PR Newswire).
Agencies: no public US influencer AOR; Jung von Matt SPREE + HANGANG built the Spicy Ferry; Innocean runs the "Ride the Buldak High" hot-sauce campaign (Korea Herald). Most social/influencer work is in-house, HQ-supported.
Fans mailed Korean Englishman ~60 boxes of snacks; the channel filmed Brits attempting the noodles without water in Feb 2014 (origin story). The format — eat a pack, no drinks, film the suffering — was infinitely replicable: 1M+ YouTube videos by 2018 (ABC), 1.5M+ TikToks by 2024. Samyang later canonized the origin with its own interview series episode featuring the creators.
On 20 Mar 2024 Cardi B posted a TikTok with food reviewer Keith Lee, saying she drove 30 minutes to an H Mart because the carbonara flavor was "all over social media" (Complex; her follow-up Habanero taste test). 20M+ views. When Q1 earnings landed on 17 May — operating profit ~3x YoY, noodle sales +50% — the stock hit its 30% daily limit, a record, and Samyang's market cap passed Nongshim's for the first time since the 1980s (Fortune, Bloomberg).
Notably, the review itself was lukewarm (6/10) — and she was never paid. No official partnership followed, despite widespread claims otherwise.
A Texas girl's tearful joy at receiving Buldak Carbonara for her birthday reached ~100M views / 10M likes (Korea Herald). Within a month, Samyang America sent a pink branded van, its mascot, ~150 boxes (~1,000 packs) and a year's supply, and threw her a backyard party. The recap video did 14M views in 22 hours (Korea Herald).
Danish authorities recalled three Buldak SKUs over "risk of acute poisoning" from capsaicin, explicitly citing viral spicy challenges among children (TIME, NBC). Global searches for Buldak quadrupled; the internet mocked the regulator, not the brand (Korea Herald). In July, Denmark reinstated two of three SKUs after independent testing — admitting its numbers came from Samyang's own marketing claims, which overstated actual heat (NBC).
Samyang then threw the "Buldak Spicy Ferry" — a branded party boat in Copenhagen harbor for ~100 influencers and fans chosen from thousands of applicants (KED, JvM case study). Samyang America's marketing director called it "a strategic move to break the narrative" (Marketing Dive).
Samyang's flagship paid program: a TikTok Branded Mission across 7 Asian markets with K-pop group (G)I-DLE as ambassadors, exclusive music and choreography, and a branded effect featuring mascot Hochi. Results per TikTok's official case study: 360M video views, 50,000+ UGC videos, +6.9% awareness, +10.8% purchase intent among frequent ramen buyers, and 2.4x ROI on offline sales vs. other media — with ~700M cumulative views across TikTok/Douyin/YouTube (Global News Top).
Viral clips of BTS's Jimin eating Buldak were credited with a +158% US sales jump, earning a personal thank-you from Samyang's vice-chair (Koreaboo). Jungkook's "bulguri" recipe (Buldak + Neoguri) sold out online and spawned official retail bundles (Rolling Stone). Samyang paid to be near this energy: main sponsor of BTS's Las Vegas shows in 2022 (PR Newswire) and, in 2026, a full BOYNEXTDOOR campaign — a rewritten hit single, "Hotter Than My EX" limited SKUs, and a short-form challenge, sold through TikTok Shop, H Mart and Walmart (Forbes).
To stretch the brand beyond noodles into hot sauce, Samyang ran "Sauce Exchange" pop-ups in NYC (7,000+ visitors) and LA, a Times Square billboard, and mascot street sampling (PR Newswire). In 2025 it became Coachella's first Korean official partner — 30,000+ pop-up visitors on weekend one, GloRilla "Buldak Duets" — returning in 2026 with a UGC sweepstakes, #BuldakCrawlsweepstakes (PR Newswire, Korea Times).
Indonesia's BPOM pulled permits for Samyang noodle imports found to contain unlabeled pig-DNA fragments — in the world's largest Muslim market (Jakarta Post). A genuine trust crisis among exactly the SE-Asian audiences the Fire Noodle Challenge had won. Samyang recovered by obtaining MUI halal certification for core Buldak variants (Coconuts).
A Canadian TikToker (~100k followers) claimed a Buldak-induced ulcer, a fabricated C$15M lawsuit "win," and an imminent North American shelf pull-out. The claims spread through major outlets before Samyang publicly called them "completely unfounded" and threatened legal action — while the creator kept posting Buldak-eating videos (Korea Herald, JoongAng Daily). A parallel ecosystem of AI-generated fake "FDA recall" articles on hijacked .edu subdomains compounds the problem.
Buldak is arguably the best-documented proof that earned-media-led brand building can outperform ad-led competitors on every financial metric that matters.

No third-party earned-media-value (EMV) dollar figure has been published for Buldak; view/post counts above are the best available proxies. Samyang's exact ad-spend line items sit in Korean-language DART filings — the qualitative picture from all sources is minimal traditional ad spend, with paid dollars layered onto proven organic demand (TikTok amplification, experiential, retail media, CTV).
Nongshim — with roughly double Samyang's revenue and a heritage ad-led model (US factories, celebrity endorsers like aespa) — was overtaken by Samyang in operating profit (2023–24) and market cap (May 2024) (KED Global). Samyang is at ~80% overseas revenue share today; Nongshim is targeting 61% by 2030 (Asia Economy). It is the closest thing the category has to an A/B test of earned-first vs. ad-first marketing.
| Risk | Evidence | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Minors & capsaicin. Challenge culture reaches Gen Alpha; DVFA found 3x Spicy carries ≥113mg capsaicin/pack — more than the Paqui chip linked to a teen's 2023 death. | Korea Times, NBC, Bitdefender | Open — no regulator has accused Samyang's marketing directly, but the comparison is now standard in coverage |
| Marketing claims as regulatory bait. Denmark's recall was based on Samyang's own exaggerated heat figures. | NBC | Partly resolved; 3x Spicy still barred in Denmark |
| Non-spice safety recalls. Ethylene-oxide (Korea, 2022); 3-MCPD/glycidyl esters (Belgium, Apr 2026). | Brussels Times | Recurring |
| Misinformation at creator scale. Fabricated lawsuit claims; AI content-farm "FDA recall" articles. | Korea Herald | Active, growing |
| Counterfeits & copycats. Look-alikes ("Bulramen", "Boodak") filled shelves during shortages; trademark disputes in 27 countries; "buldak" only registered as an English mark in Korea in 2026. | Asia Economy, Korea Times | Structural |
| Virality concentration. One unpaid video moved the stock 30% in a day; the same channel transmits negative shocks. Analysts flag "spicy fatigue" as competitors converge on the niche. | Fortune, Korea Invest Insights | Mitigation: flavor diversification, sauces, non-spicy lines |
| Supply lagging demand. Chronic Carbonara stockouts (eBay resale ~$25/5-pack) frustrated consumers and fed the counterfeit ecosystem. | Asia Economy | Easing — Miryang plant 2 (2025), China plant (2027) |
Notably absent: any reported FTC disclosure action or sponsorship-transparency scandal — a structural benefit of a model in which the biggest creator moments are genuinely unpaid.
